Cain Cressall

Cain Cressall has been an extreme vocalist for more than a decade with Australian thrash metal band Malignant Monster, based in Western Australia. Since 2009, Cain Cressall has also fronted international touring band The Amenta, an experimental metal group based in the Eastern States of Australia. Cressall has also collaborated on a variety of projects such as Ouroboros and Swedish melodic death metal Zornheym. Cressall is interested in exploring the limits of vocal ability and is currently launching a coaching studio for extreme vocalists.

“Interactive Vocal Coaching Presentation: Extreme Vocals as Marginal and Mainstream Phenomena”
As an extreme metal vocalist, Cain Cressall will explore the limits of vocalization, using the technical and systematic processes of vocal coaching. Thusly, this will be an interactive presentation in which the conference attendees will be asked to participate in the experience.

The objective of the presentation is to illustrate the way mainstream popular music has in fact influenced and shaped extreme metal vocals and, further, that much mainstream vocal technique is also derived from metal influences. Cressall will demonstrate that the extremity of vocality lies within all of us and can be called forth using simple techniques.

Using a variety of vocal samples, from Michael Jackson to Slayer’s Tom Araya, Cressall will take the conference members on a journey to the outer limits of oral expression by using classic step-by-step vocal coaching techniques. Interwoven with the vocal coaching lesson will be an analysis of what kinds of theoretical and social issues might be called forth within each experience. Laura Glitsos will provoke questions based on contemporary popular music in order to highlight both the proximity and marginality of extreme vocals in cultural constructions of popular music.
